Week #1: Who was Jesus?
Jesus was born to a virgin. Her name was Mary. She was a young woman. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she was going to have a son. The son she was going to have would be named Jesus. Jesus would be the one who would save all people from their sins. Jesus was born. He grew up to be a man. Then Jesus started to help people by healing them, casting out demons, and teaching them the Word of God. He was nailed to a cross for the sins of the world. He died on the cross. And after 3 days He rose from the dead. Jesus went up into heaven where He now lives to hear our prayers.
Jesus never sinned
The angel Gabriel talked to Mary and said: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy…” (Luke 1:35). Mary became pregnant supernaturally without human intervention. This is what Christians believe. Mary did not have sex with anyone and yet she became pregnant. It was a miracle.
Jesus was holy because He came down from heaven. Jesus lived in heaven before He came to earth. Jesus said: “For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.” (John 6:38).
Jesus was born a king
Jesus entered this world as a baby. He was born without a human father. Jesus said: “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36).
Someone asked Jesus: “Are you the king of the Jews?” (Luke 23:3). And Jesus replied and told them: “Yes I am.” They nailed Jesus to the cross to kill him and they put a piece of wood on the cross that said: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” (Matthew 27:37).
After Jesus was born, wise men from the east travelled a long way to worship Him because they said: “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2).
Jesus was a messenger who had a message of salvation
Jesus spoke to the people and taught them: “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.” (John 11:25).
Jesus told the people of His time that if they believed in Him they would go to heaven. Jesus also said that anyone who believes in Him would live forever. Jesus’ message is for you and for me.
Jesus performed miracles
Jesus performed many miracles. He stopped a big storm in the sea. There was a dead man, and Jesus told the man to live again, and he did. Jesus prayed and God gave food for the people to eat.
When the people saw all the miracles Jesus was doing they said: “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” (Mark 6:2).
Jesus healed people
Jesus healed many people when He was on earth. And Jesus is still healing people today because: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8).
Jesus said to a young girl: “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” (Mark 5:34).
Jesus said to a blind man: “You may go. Your eyes are healed because of your faith.” (Mark 10:52).
Jesus healed 10 people who had leprosy: “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were going, they were healed.” (Luke 17:14).
Jesus never killed anyone with a sword
Jesus was a man peace. He never went to war or assassinated anyone. He never owned slaves. He never killed anyone when He was on earth. Jesus was never in a war. He never had an army. When His followers wanted to fight with swords Jesus said to them: “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52).
Jesus never married
Jesus never got married and He never had any children. Jesus lived until He was 33 years old and died on the cross. Jesus: “appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:7-8).
Jesus said He was God
Jesus came down from heaven. A body was prepared for Him.
Jesus grew into a man and said that He was God. The Bible says: “the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.” (John 5:18).
Then they tried to kill Jesus by throwing stones at Him. And Jesus said: “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” (John 10:31-33).
Jesus can forgive sin
Only God can forgive people’s sins. And Jesus forgave people’s sins.
“I tell you, her sins, and they are many, have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?” And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Luke 7:47-50).
