Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

that the blind will see,

that the oppressed will be set free,

and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.””

A captive is someone who has been taken prison by force by an enemy.

2 Timothy 2:25-26 “Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.”

Here we see it again. People are being held captive, they are prisoners, they are caught in a trap. Only this time it is from the devil.

Are they to blame? Is it our fault that we were born sinners? No. We were born sinners. We were all born sinners. We had no choice in this. We couldn’t say to God “Well, I’d like to born pure, without sin, ok?” No it didn’t work like that did it.

So sometimes we are bound by Satan’s power. Sometimes we are bound the power of sin or the selfish nature. Or sometimes we are bound by our love of the world.

But it says in the Bible…..

The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

that the blind will see,

that the oppressed will be set free,

and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.””

Some people are captives or slaves because they are being dominated by some emotion, like lust or greed or a desire to have power. These people love these things of the flesh so much that they become slaves to them and have to do what that emotion tells them to do because they have desired to do so.

What a mess!

But there is a way out! There is a Saviour! Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins. He provides us the way out. He died on the cross for our sins and never sinned; He defeated the Devil because Jesus never fell into temptation like the rest of us have. And Jesus defeated death because He was the first person to ever be raised from the dead to eternal life. Jesus is Lord!

Hebrews 2:14 “Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.”

An enemy is someone who wants to harm us or injure us in some way. We’ve all known people like that. But we as humans beings also have other enemies, enemies that we cannot see. There is the spiritual world of demons that we cannot see but we know they exist. Satan prowls around the earth looking for people he can destroy spiritually and eternally. But also our flesh and our sins are our enemies. Lust for power and money is our enemy because it wants to destroy us. People may get rich and may get power but Jesus said “what does it profit someone if they inherit the whole world and lose their own soul.”

And what about the many people who have committed adultery because they gave in to the lust of the flesh. There marriages and reputations have been destroyed.

These sins are our enemies, but thank God that through Jesus Christ we can overcome our enemies – our sins, our fears, the devil’s power. Hallelujah! Through the power of Jesus Christ’s bl ood our sins are forgiven, and through His resurrection power we are given a new life in the Spirit of Christ that raises us up from the dead Spiritually and makes us alive to God.

Praise His Holy name brothers and sisters! We are in Christ!
