Jesus is God
Many people are offended when they read in the Bible that Jesus is God. Maybe it is because they do not think God would humble Himself and take upon Himself a body of a man; or maybe like the Jews of Jesus’ time they simply couldn’t believe that Jesus was God. Or maybe some people are offended to learn that Jesus is God because they do not understand nor can they accept what the Bible means when it says Jesus is the Son of God.
The Old Testament prophets spoke about Jesus Christ and they knew that He was going to be God in the body of a man.
It says in Isaiah chapter 9 starting at verse 6:
“For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His government and its peace
will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
for all eternity.”
The Bible says God will gives us a son, a man, a person, a human being; and this human being will be called Mighty God.
In the New Testament, after the birth of Jesus, we are told by the apostle John in his first letter, chapter 5 and verse 20:
“And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.”
The Old and New Testament are in agreement
So we see that the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament apostles are in agreement: they both say that God will give us a Son and this Son is God. In fact, the Bible says that Jesus is the Son of God – but what does this mean?
Jesus is the Son of God
In Hebrews chapter 1 verse 2 we read: “God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.” The Bible says that God created the universe through the Son. We all know that God created the universe; and the Book of Hebrews says it was the Son who created the universe – therefore the Son is God.
And in 1 John 5:20 we read that the “Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God.”
The Son of God is eternal
Many people misunderstand the phrase Son of God: the Bible says the Son of God is eternal. This is why Jesus says over and over again in the Bible that He was sent to this earth. If Jesus was sent to this earth He must have existed before the earth was created – Jesus was eternal; but how was He eternal?
Jesus was eternal as the Son of God. If John chapter 1:1 Jesus is called the Word of God. We read in John chapter 1 starting at verse 1:
“In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
Jesus is the Word of God; Jesus is the Son of God; Jesus is God.
Jesus was sent into this world
Jesus says many times that He was sent into this world. It says in John chapter 3:17: “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”
Jesus Himself says: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” – John 20:21
“I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.” – John 13:20
“Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.” – John 14:24
“And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.” – John 17:3
Jesus said He came down from heaven
Yes. The Bible is very clear that Jesus is God and that He came down from heaven. Jesus Himself said so in John 6:38: “For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.”
Jesus is the eternal one; He is the Son of God who is eternal; the eternal Son of God became a man and lived upon this earth for the sole purpose of dying on the cross and saving those who believe in Him from hell and giving them eternal life. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, died on the cross for our sins and tasted death for us. He paid the punishment for our sins. He paid the price for our sins so that we could be forgiven.
We are given the Holy Spirit who is God. The Holy Spirit gives us eternal life. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are God. Three in one – the eternal godhead – the eternal God.
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved
If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour you will be saved; if you accept Him into your heart you will receive the Holy Spirit into your life and you will know that you are a child of God. Your soul will be cleansed from sin; you will receive eternal life, and as the Bible says:
“Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name. But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”
Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?”
They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.” – John 10:25-33
