If Jesus is God and the Father is God, how can one be stronger or greater than the other? If the Son of God is God, and the Father is God, how can the Father be greater than the Son? How can the Son and the Father be equal but one is greater than the other? The Bible teaches us that there is a Trinity: The Father is God, the Son of God is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. All three are God, and there is only one God. This is the mystery and the miracle of the Christian faith. This is the mystery and miracle of God. He is one God but He appears to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Bible also teaches that the Son of God willingly took the role of a servant. The Bible teaches that the Son of God, even though He is God and equal to God, chose to be a servant to the Father. The Son of God was the perfect Son and was obedient to all the requirements and demands of His Father. Even though the Son of God was God, He chose to make Himself a servant. The Son of God, Jesus, chose to be obedient to the Father even obedient to the point of dying on the cross for our sins.
Jesus as the Son of God is equal to God the Father
The Bible teaches us that Jesus as the Son of God is equal to God the Father. “This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” (John 5:18).
So there is no doubt that the Bible says Jesus was God, and that Jesus was equal to God in power, strength and as God.
The Father is greater than all
However, Jesus chose to become a servant to God the Father. So even though Jesus was in His very nature God, Jesus chose to become a servant to God the Father so that Jesus could die on the cross and save humanity from the power of the devil and the power of death.
“If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am.” (John 14:28).
“My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” (John 10:29).
If God is greater than Jesus then Jesus isn’t God?
Jesus chose to become a servant to God the Father. We read about this in the letter to the Philippians. Listen to what the Bible teaches us about the equality of God the Son, to God the Father, and the obedience of God the Son as a servant to God the Father.
“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
Though he was God (The Eternal Son of God),
he did not think of equality with God
as something to cling to.
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,
he humbled himself in obedience to God
and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor
and gave him the name above all other names,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11).
Here we read about the mystery and the miracle that Jesus Christ, as the Eternal Son of God, as God Himself and therefore equal to God, became a man. And not only did the Son of God become a man, but the Son of God as a man chose to become a servant to God the Father. Jesus was the perfect servant. Jesus became perfectly submitted to the will of God and go to die on the cross for our sins.
Some things Jesus chose not to know
As God the Son, Jesus chose to not know when the time of the end of the world would be. Jesus said: “No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.” (Matthew 24:36).
There are many things in the Bible we do not understand. And how could we. We are made in the image of God, but we are not God Himself. Our human minds cannot comprehend or understand all the things of God. Many things remain a mystery and we accept many things about God and the Bible by faith. We believe God exists even though none of us has even seen God in His fullness. We believe that Jesus walked on the earth and died on the cross even though we were not alive 2,000 years ago when Jesus was alive on the earth.
It’s a mystery, Only God knows
How can God be the Son of God, and Father God at the same time and still be only one God? This is something only God truly knows and understands. We can believe that God entered a human body and died on the cross for our sins because we know that God is all powerful and that He can do anything He chooses to do that is within His will and that is without sin.
And when God became a man, that body that He entered became God. This is another mystery. But the Bible teaches us that: “the Word became human and made his home among us” (John 1:14).
God became a man. The Son of God entered a human body and chose to be a servant to the Father.
Jesus told His followers and He tells us today through His perfect word: “Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.” (John 17:5).
Jesus entered humanity as the Eternal Son of God who is God. He then humbled Himself and became a servant to God His Father and to humanity at large. Jesus humbled Himself and died on the cross for sins He did not commit. Then Jesus rose from the dead and went back to heaven. And God the Father exalted Jesus, the Son of God, back to the glory and the place of equality the Son of God had before He appeared on earth in the body of a man. Believe and you will be saved.
