One of the most difficult things is to teach someone what is good for them if they don’t believe you. With God’s help and by the help of the Holy Spirit I hope to be able to convince you that if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour you will be saved.
There are many things we know about that we know are challenging and dangerous. For example, it is common sense not to go out walking at night alone if you are in a big city, so you walk around during the day and stop inside at night if you can. It is not good to carry around a lot of money and for people to know that you are carrying a lot of money, so you hide it in your socks or somewhere else. And we know that there are certain places that are unsafe so we do not go there and we tell other people not to go their either.
But what about eternal life and heaven? Are you sure that you are going to go to heaven and not to hell? You may think you know how to get to a certain place and you start walking or driving there and then you get lost. Or maybe you ask someone for directions and then steal your money and beat you; or maybe you ask someone else for directions but they tell you to go to the wrong place because they didn’t know how to get there.
How can you be sure that you are going to heaven? How can you be sure that the person telling you where heaven is knows how to get there? Wouldn’t it be better for you to find out how to get to heaven from someone who has been there? If you could find someone who has been in heaven then you could ask them how to get there and they could tell you?
Jesus said: “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
“Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”
Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said. For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up. As it is written in the Scriptures, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.)
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life! Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.” – John 6
Jesus came down from heaven
Yes it’s true, Jesus came down from heaven: the Word became God; the Messiah and Saviour became a man. God lives in heaven and Jesus said He came from heaven; that He was sent from heaven.
God spoke in heaven and said: “Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” – Isaiah 6:8
And so Jesus came to earth to live for us and to die for us.
The way to heaven
Many people want to know how to get to heaven. They think in their hearts: “what will happen when I die? And where will I go?”
Many people were asking Jesus this very question when He was on earth. One such man was a person by the name of Thomas. Thomas really wanted to go to heaven; but he was not sure how to get there. So Jesus told Thomas that the way to get to heaven is to believe in Him; Jesus said “Believe in me and you will go to heaven.” This question is something on all our hearts and we really want God to answer us and give us peace about it.
Here is what Jesus said about going to heaven and how Jesus is the way to get to heaven. If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour you will get to heaven.
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”
“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” – John 20
Don’t wait until it’s too late
If you are running for a bus and you wait too long you may miss your bus. Or if you have to take a boat somewhere and sleep too long you may run to the water and find that the boat has already left. Or maybe you need to get to the airport to catch a plane but you get stuck in traffic, or your car breaks down, and you cannot get to the airport – and you miss your plane. These things happen and sometimes we could have been to blame for being late.
What about heaven? When we die and stand before God is it too late to do something about getting into heaven? Yes…it is too late if you wait until you die to get to heaven. You need to get to heaven right now; you need to receive eternal life right now in order to get to heaven.
And Jesus told us the way to get to heaven: Jesus said “Believe in me and you will go to heaven,” Jesus also said “I am the way the truth and the life.” So if you put your faith in Jesus Christ He will give you what you are asking for – He will give you eternal life.
In Hebrews chapter 12 from the Bible we are told that if you wait until after you die to believe in Christ it is too late: “Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.”
And also there was a rich man who wanted to go to heaven after he died but he could not go because he was already suffering in hell: “Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores….Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.… there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.”
It was too late for the rich man. Jesus has suffered and paid the price for our sins. It is up to us to accept Him now and avoid the fires of hell. This is the second death called the lake of fire. “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
The rich man was in the lake of fire called hell and could no longer go to heaven – it was too late, but it is not too late for you now. If you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour you will be saved. It is not too late.
