Jesus died on the cross. He was nailed to a cross and left there, to die. To make sure Jesus was dead, a Roman soldier put his spear into Jesus’ side and the water and blood of Jesus came out. Jesus was buried. And after 3 days Jesus rose from the dead. It was always God’s plan for Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.

Jesus was a human being

“Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.” (Hebrews 2:14-15).

“…each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

As a human being, Jesus had flesh and blood. As Spirit, Jesus entered the world from heaven to die for our sins. He appeared on earth to be a sacrifice for our sins so that God could forgive us of our sins. Jesus was Spirit clothed in a human body.

The Bible says Jesus died

Jesus had to die so that He could suffer for our sins. His death was an act of sacrifice for our sins. He did not have to suffer and die for us but Jesus chose to be our sacrifice and to suffer and die for our sins.

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8).

“Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.” (1 Peter 3:18)

Jesus died the First death

There are two deaths that can happen to a human being. The first death is the death of the physical body. This is when the heart of a human being stops working and the blood in the human body stops moving. Because the life of a human being is in the blood, when the blood stop moving through a human body, the body dies. This is the first death.

But, a human being is made up of a physical body and a spirit, or a soul. When God made human beings He made them with a human body and a soul or a spirit: “But there is a spirit within people, the breath of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent.” (Job 32:8).

Jesus died the second death

The second death is when the spirit or the soul is cast into hell to suffer forever for the sins that people have committed.

“Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that. But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he’s the one to fear.” (Luke 12:4-5).

What happens when you die?

When human beings die they no longer have breath or walk upon this earth. Their body has died. But there spirit or soul does not die. Everyone knows and understands that even after the body of a human being dies, the person, or their soul or spirit, will go before God to be judged. This is what is called the Judgement Day.

If the person has not accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, then the person’s spirit or soul is sent to hell, into the lake of fire, to suffer and pay for the sins the person committed. Hell lasts forever.

The good news is that “Jesus tasted death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:9).

But if the person has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour then that person’s soul or spirit will go to heaven to be with God forever.

If you believe in Jesus you will not die the second death

“I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.
(John 11:25-26)

If we believe in Jesus Christ we have passed from death into life. We have received eternal life because we have put our faith in Jesus Christ. We are no longer under the penalty of death but we now have eternal life because our sins have been forgiven. Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead so that we could have eternal life.

This is why Jesus said to the thief who was on the cross beside Him: “today you will be with me in paradise.

If our sins are forgiven we will not die in our sins. Jesus said that it is our sins that separate us from God, but if we put our faith in Him and believe in Him, He will remove our sins from us. And if He has removed our sins from us then we are no longer under the judgment of death. The second death has no more power over us because we have the blood of Jesus covering us.

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved

“One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!”
But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:39-43).
