Jesus taught a lot of practical ways that we can show the love of God to other people. And it is truly wonderful that He has been so good to us in those ways. Here is a part of Jesus’ teachings that show how important it is to do the little things to help others in this world:

“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

“Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

“Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’

“And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

“And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” – Matthew 25

We can show the love of God to other people by doing these small things for others: giving them a cup of water; providing them with some clothes; giving them so food; visiting them in the hospital or in their homes; and even visiting some people in prison. All these things are wonderful to do.

And there is a mystery in all of this: Jesus says that when we do these things to other people we are doing them to Him.

Visiting the sick

I went to visit the sick with a friend of mine; he is an alcoholic and gripped with the power of this addiction. He is still a human being. He was made in the image of God. He is entitled to food and water and clothes and we pray that his addiction is taking away by the Lord so he can live a life for God. In the meantime we visited him and brought him some food.

As we visited him we prayed for him, we read the Bible to him, we encouraged him that the Lord was able and willing to set him free from his addictions. And then as we were about to leave this Somali man who was addicted to alcohol turned to my friend and extending his hand. My friend shook his hand and in that moment you could feel the presence of Jesus; you could feel Jesus there in the room with us; and we experienced what Jesus said would happen: “I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.”

Love each other

Peter tells us in the New Testament: “You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.”

And this is the key to being a Christian – loving others and serving them in any way you can. The Lord is good and powerful; the Lord can and does do many miracles – like healing people, delivering people from demonic powers, provide financial help when it is needed, and many other power works.

Let us not forget the most important work of all – love.

Jesus said to his disciples:

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

Loving each other means things like talking kindly to one another; it means thinking about what the other person needs and helping them receive it. Loving other people means sacrificing yourself in order to be able to help them.

You may be in need

You may be the person in need. You may have somehow been able to reach hearing or reading this message and it turns out that you are the one in need and not able to give anything to help anyone because you don’t have anything to give.

God is the great provider. God does not tell us to do anything in His Word that He Himself doesn’t do Himself. If God says that we should feed the hungry, that is what He does; if God says that we should visit the sick, that is what He does. If you have a need then I want to encourage you and pray for you in a few minutes that the God of Hope would fill you and help you receive what it is you need.

The Bible is filled with people who were very needy and this earth has many people living on it who are very needy. We as human beings have spiritual needs as well as physical needs, we also have financial needs, we are sick and in need of healing, we are poor and in need of money, we are hungry and in need of food, and we are empty and dry inside and in need of the love and care that only our Father in heaven can provide for us.

To the many service providers

And for those of you out there on the streets or in the communities, in the hospitals or in the shelters, know that God is working through you to reach the needy people of this world.

The Lord Himself said: “If you help the poor, you are lending to the LORD–and he will repay you!”

And know that you are fulfilling and doing what Jesus has called us to do: help the poor.

Let us spend some time in prayer

“Lord…I pray that you would help each of us where we are and the needs that we have. Some of us have plenty upon this earth and we need to share what we have with others, so help us Lord share what we have with others who are on this earth. Some of us have nothing and depend on want to receive what others have; so we pray that you would help us get what it is we need today and that you would help us find those people who can help us, and help those people who have something to give find those who are in need.

For those of us who are sick, Lord God in the name of Jesus Christ I pray that you would heal them by the power of your name. There is healing in the name of Jesus Christ; there is power in the blood of Jesus. Lord Jesus Christ you died on the cross for our sins and your Word says “by my stripes you are healed.” Help us with our unbelief, we confess our unbelief to you and say that some of us lack the faith to believe that we will be healed or that you will heal those who we are praying for. You are not a God who will cast us away – you said in your Word that you will in no way cast out anyone who comes to you. So God Almighty hear our prayers and heal those that we are praying for.

Those who are demon possessed or afflicted with some kind of curse. Lord God help them to be delivered from what it is that is bothering them or tormenting them. In the name of Jesus I pray that they would be set free from the unclean spirits that are tormenting them and making them sick. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed, O Lord God Almighty set them free and help them.

God for those who believe in you but are scared of their relatives, friends and family and community; for those who are afraid of the persecution that is coming upon them. God we pray in the name of Jesus that their faith would not fail and that you would be with them in the trials and troubles. God help them in the name of Jesus Christ to be delivered from fear in the Name of Jesus. God we pray a special prayer that would deliver the Somalis from the spirit of fear and that all curses and witchcraft that has been placed upon them would be broken and disappear in the name of Jesus Christ.

And Lord God Almighty help those who are reaching their friends and family for Christ; help those who are secret believers and yet still want to reach others for you. Teach them Lord how to do so and protect them by the power of your name.

Amen.
