If you want to become a Christian you have to repent and confess your sins to Christ to be saved. To repent means that you are sorry for the sins you have committed against God. To repent means that you are sad because you disobeyed God. And now you want to turn away from the bad things that you have been doing and you want to ask God to forgive you of your sins.
Just saying you are a Christian is not enough
Many people say they are Christians because they want to get some food or shelter from someone else. Some people say they are Christians because they want help with immigration. They want to go to another country so they say they are Christians.
Just saying you are a Christian will not be enough for God to forgive you of your sins and give you eternal life. You must repent of your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
Many people can say that they will turn away from their bad behaviour. Many people can say they will stop being bad but they continue in their sin. But they cannot lie to God about following Jesus. People can say whatever they want. God knows what is in their hearts.
That is why the Bible says: “So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3).
You have to follow Jesus
It is not enough to say: “I am a Christian”. You have to act on it. You have to behave like a Christian. You have to stand up for Jesus and the Bible and be ready to be persecuted for your faith.
Jesus says: “Does this offend you? Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again? The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But some of you do not believe me.”(For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.) Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.” (John 6:61-65).
Jesus said that people have to believe in Him with all their hearts, they cannot just say that they believe in Him with their lips. Jesus knows the difference if you are just saying that you are a Christian.
“And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.” (Romans 10:8-10).
Counting the cost
Is your soul worth more than all the riches of this world? Is going to heaven worth more to you than what this world can give you? Is salvation in Christ worth more than money? Do you love Jesus more than you love your family, your children, your wife or your own life?
This is the cost and the question that Jesus is asking. How much do you love you me? And if you love me you will obey me.
Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, got scared and told other people that he did not know Jesus and that he did not want to follow Jesus. After Peter said this, the Bible tells us: “Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.” (Matthew 26:75).
Peter repented of his sin of unbelief and fear. Peter was afraid of what other people might do to him if they found out he was a Christian so he lied to them. And after he lied he felt very bad and sad. So he cried and asked God to forgive him.
Jesus forgave Peter:
“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” (John 21:15-19).
You have to change your life
In order to be a Christian your life has to change. You cannot be the same as your were before you were a Christian, and then after you say you are a Christian you are exactly the same person. Nothing has changed. You have to change your lifestyle because as a Christian you are born again. God is in you and God is working in you.
To become a Christian you have to open your heart to God and ask God to come into your life to be saved. Then you have to be ready to live for, and die for Jesus.
