I have been very pleased to see comments coming back from my brothers and sisters in Christ from what I have posted on this website. I can’t hide my gratitude to all of you who wrote back to me. I am very aware of the difficulties that we all are facing, but through the hard times the good moments come, nothing comes to us just by relaxing. Everything of value had to be earned and it all takes time and effort.
I want to make a few comments something we all read on the SCM Website under the title: “7 things a Somali Christian should or shouldn’t do.”
When you read it you will see a lot of things like:
1. Do not go and visit Africa if your parents and clan member tell you to.
2. Do not under any circumstances ever marry a Muslim.
3. Be as wise as a snake and as gentle as a dove. A snake is very clever and shows up in one place then hides and shows up in another place.
4. Do not use your real name when you go to church.
5. Move away from your clan and Somali community.
6. Go to church every Sunday.
7. Let go of the flesh. Let go of your clan. You are a Christian now.
You may say, “OH Jesus that’s too much. I can’t do that. I can’t! It’s too much. I am alone and I am really frustrated about the things that I have to do to be Christian.”
Well remember my friend, whatever you do, there are a lot of people like you out there who suffering more than you are. Be happy that you are not in Somalia and that you have your own freedom in your hand now. Choose what your mind tells you to do and listen to the message of God – it will really change your life.
You may also ask yourself “what’s the advantage of being a Christian, is it really worth going through all these steps to just be a Christian?”
Think about it my friend. Do you want Eternal life? Do you want to have all your needs met? Be at peace, have joy, hope, and contentment? Do you want to live free from worries and have God as your best friend? Do you want to experience the joy of never being alone? Being full of power from on high…healing for your mind, soul, and body…deliverance from affliction and oppression, protection from disease, and on an on? Dot you want that?
What some might call disadvantages are all summed up in this one saying, “Denial of self or Death to self”. In other words, we must deny our own desires and give up all our worldly dreams. We must embrace God completely and pray for His will in our lives by giving up our own will (desires and dreams) and live for Him.
This is what we call “crucifixion of the flesh”. The flesh is just a way of thinking that does not line up with the Word of God. It must be destroyed. This is a painful process to be sure but one that is well worth it. Paul said, “I die daily.” This simply means that everyday we must choose to follow His will and not do what we desire to do on our own.
For example, there were days when our minds were really disturbed all we were thinking was ill thinking. And those thoughts were the result of the life we had, our lives without faith. We did whatever our clan and our warlords told us …but obviously we don’t do that now. We can’t.
We walk in love. We have changed our way of living. Now we live to love the people around us. We love all our neighbors. We love our brothers and sisters in CHRIST – people who are happy to accept us as we are…so that others might see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. It is not about us, it is all about Him. To Him be the glory. We can’t do anything by ourselves that is worthy of glory or recognition. ALL GLORY BELONGS TO GOD.
Yes my brother and sister it’s true. It’s all in your hands to change your way and open your heart and cry our for Jesus. Yes know it’s very hard for you to do that, but believe me you will earn more and more.
Here are three things that show us how wonderful it is to be a Christian:
First, being a Christian can change the way you look at life. When you go church you can listen to the preacher during the worship service and you can also pray to God. For example, you can learn moral concepts and knowledge from preacher of the Bible and you can also pray to God about everything that matters in your life – whether it’s good or bad. When your in church you can talk to God and He can make your life more peaceful and wonderful.
Then when you are outside of the church you can use the things you learned in church to help you live a righteous life. This world is full of temptations and evil and the things you learn from the Bible will help your behavior. You can pray to God inside of the church or outside of the church. You can pray whenever you feel sad or helpless because God can help you through those sufferings.
Secondly, you can extend your social contacts. You will meet many brothers and sisters in Christ in the church. There are many people who go to church and some of these people have been Christians for a long time. They can help you in your walk with God. They are all friendly and willing to talk to you. For example, you can try to make friends in the church because it is just like a small society and most of the people in church are willing to be friend with you too. You may meet someone new when you tell them about Jesus. As a Christian, you need to preach to someone who doesn’t know the truth and has lived without religion, or someone who just needs your help. You can make friends with these people because Christians are filled with love and consideration.
Finally as a Christian you will go to heaven after death. You need to repent and turn away from the sinful lifestyle you are living and turn to God and be baptized and follow Jesus. The Bible says in (John 3:5) “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” And in Acts 2:38 we read: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. When you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour you will avoid the punishment of hell and have eternal life. In (John 3:16) we read “That whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” That someone is Jesus Christ.
And last but not least my fellow Somali Christian brothers and sisters, remember your country and your people. They need our help. We need to start thinking big and we need to save our people from the darkness that they are in. They need to follow Jesus because He is the light.
God bless you all my brothers and sisters in Christ.
