Jesus never sinned (Bible 101, Week #6).
Every human being on the face of the earth has sinned. We are all sinners. Every human being who ever lived has sinned. That is because we are all born with a weakness, we are born with sin living inside of us. But Jesus was born as God. Jesus was God in the body of a man. So He never sinned. God can never sin. Jesus never sinned.
We have all sinned, but Jesus never sinned
“For I was born a sinner–yes, from the moment my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5).
As human beings we are born with sin living inside of us. This is because sin “entered the world through one man” (Romans 5:12). Adam sinned and sin entered the world.
But Jesus Christ was not born as a descendant of Adam. Jesus is from heaven and is the Word of God. And God does not have a sinful nature. God is pure and holy. He is righteous and just. God can never sin because He does not have a sinful nature.
Jesus can never sin because He does not have a sinful nature. The Jewish religious leaders wanted the Romans to charge Jesus with a crime so that Jesus would be killed, but the Bible says that other people did not see that Jesus did anything wrong:
“Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I find nothing wrong with this man!” (Luke 23:4).
Jesus was born Holy
“God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary. When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.”
She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant. The angel told her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favour with God. You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus. He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever, and his kingdom will never end.” Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.” The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, holy child developing inside you will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:26-35).
Jesus was both a man and God. Jesus was someone who was begotten from a woman because He was born as a baby. But Jesus was also God because He came down from heaven and was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, not because she had sex with a man. This makes Jesus unique. This makes Jesus holy. Jesus never sinned. He came down from heaven. He is the eternal Word of God.
Jesus never lied
Everyone has lied. We have made small lies and some of us have made big lies. We have all lied. But Jesus never lied. He told the truth even when people wanted to kill Him.
“Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me! Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God” (John 8:42-47).
No one can say that Jesus ever sinned. Even those who wanted to kill Him could not accuse Him of any sin. Jesus was pure, holy, and righteous. He was a perfect man who never sinned because He is God.
“God is not a man, so he does not lie” (Numbers 23:19). Human beings lie. But God does not lie. And God became a man and did not lie. God’s power entered a human body and filled that body with goodness and light.
God became a man
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it… He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him… So the Word became human and made his home among us” (John 1:1-14).
Jesus never sinned because God can never sin. God became a human being when the power of the Holy Spirit came upon Mary. God can never sin.
Everyone knows that Jesus never sinned
“Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?”
They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:31-33).
The people of Jesus’ time knew that He never sinned. But many people did not like when Jesus said He was God. When Jesus said He was God the people wanted to kill Him, even though they could not find any sins in Jesus. And yet, when Jesus said He was God He was not lying. He was telling the truth. Because Jesus can never lie, and Jesus can never sin. Jesus is God. Believe in Him and you will be saved.
