I want to talk to you today about moving mountains. We all have certain problems or obstacles in our lives that are frustrating us from getting what it is we want. And, what we want is good and righteous and holy. So we are not wanting something that is against God’s will, we are wanting something that is good to desire. Maybe you’re out of work and need a job. It is a good thing to desire to have a job so that you can pay your rent, or buy food. But for whatever reason you have been unable to find a job. You have a mountain of unemployment in your life.
Or maybe you are an addict. And you have been trying for years to get rid of your addiction, but no matter how hard you try, the addiction keeps coming back. You keep giving in to that thing that you wish was never there. You have a mountain of addiction in your life.
Or maybe you have a fear of some kind. You keep having nightmares because of something that happened to you in the past. You’ve tried sleeping pills, medications, and meditation, but none of that stuff seems to help. So you are looking for a miracle. What you need is to move that mountain that is in your life. You have a mountain of fear and torment in your life.
Jesus said that if you had faith you could say to that mountain – get thrown into the sea – and it would obey you. In other words, Jesus is saying that you have the power to command that mountain to move – and it will obey you. We are the ones who have the power to be able to say to our mountains – move! – and they will move.
In order to move mountains in the spiritual realm we need to have faith. Here is what Jesus said about moving mountains,
“Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” (Mark 11:22-25).
What I am saying is that you can replace your issue and say what Jesus told you to say. You can say to your unemployment, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea.” You can say to your addiction, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea.” You can say to your fears, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea.” Whatever your mountain is – you have the power to command it to leave.
Maybe you are a Somali Christian and you are so depressed because you are persecuted for your faith. None of your family members believes in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Only you do. You may think it is all over. That the sun will never shine again. But dear brother, or sister, God has a plan for you. He wants to save your family and He wants to use you to reach millions of Somalis with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Open your eyes of faith. Look up to the heavens. Look up to God. God has a big plan for your life. He wants to use you in a big way. He wants you to be like a shining star in the heavens guiding people to His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus, the eternal Son of God who became a man. Jesus, who is the bread of heaven, who came from heaven into the body of a baby and was born to a virgin. Jesus who walked on the water and raised people from the dead. Our Jesus. The Jesus you asked to come into your heart. The Jesus who saved you from your sins and gave you a new life.
God has a plan for you that is so much bigger that the four walls around you. God is so much bigger that the things that are happening in your life right now. God is speaking to you and showing you that plan for you life but you’re afraid to take it. You’re held back by your addiction. You’re held back because other people say that you are not worth it. Others tell you that you are crazy. That God doesn’t want to use you. That you are just making it up. But God has a plan for you to reach the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Reach out to God and submit to His royal plan for your life.
Jesus said that each of us has the power through prayer, and speaking out, to move mountains. We can move the mountain of darkness over Somalia. We can move the mountain of unbelief and silence that is hovering over Somalis around the world. We can shine the light of Jesus into the darkness and the darkness will not be able to stop it. Praise the Lord!
Jesus said, “But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.” Faith – my brother and sister. Faith is the big equalizer. Faith is the weapon that sickness cannot defeat. Faith is the tool that unemployment cannot stop. Faith is the light that the darkness of fear cannot defeat. Faith. My faith. Your faith. Our faith together cannot be defeated.
Jesus also said, “ I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). Jesus is saying that it is faith that overcomes the world. If your faith is weak then pray and ask God to strengthen your faith. Pray and fast and your faith will increase. Pray, fast, and read the Bible and your faith will increase even more.
The teacher John said in the Bible,
“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:4-5, NLT).
