This is a very misunderstood question. When you think of this question, do not have a mental picture in your mind of how you were conceived. Do not think of the normal way a woman becomes pregnant, like the way your mother became pregnant. Mary did not have sex before she gave birth to Jesus.
Jesus was both man and God at the same time
This is the mystery and miracle of Jesus. He was both God and man at the same time. The Bible teaches us that the angel Gabriel went to a woman named Mary who had never had sexual intercourse with a man. She was a virgin.
The angel said to Mary: “Mary, do not be afraid. You have found favor with God. See! You are to become a mother and have a Son. You are to give Him the name Jesus.” (Luke 2:29-31).
But Mary was confused. She did not know how she could become pregnant because she was not married. Mary knew in her heart that she was not going to have sex until she got married. So Mary did not understand how she was going to get pregnant. Then the angel Gabriel explained to her how she was going to get pregnant without a man.
The angel Gabriel said to Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come on you. The power of the Most High will cover you. The holy Child you give birth to will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 2:35).
Jesus was in His very nature God. Jesus was God in a human body. Jesus is unique. There is no one else like Him. He is one of a kind. He is God in a man.
Jesus was begotten
To beget means to be born. Begotten means that you have been born into this world. Your mother gave you birth and you were begotten. God, as a baby, was born into this world. God, in the body of a baby, was begotten into this world. Begotten simply means born into this world.
The Bible teaches us that: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17).
When the Bible says “God gave his one and only Son” it means that God’s Son was begotten. It means that God’s son was born into this world. But remember, God’s Son was born into this world through a virgin, a woman who never had sex with a man before Jesus was born. And God Himself is not begotten or created, but a body was created for Him.
The Son of God is God
Here we need to talk about the Trinity. The Christian believes that there is only one God. And that God exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father is God, the Holy Spirit is God, and the Son is God. So in this sense the Son of God is eternal. We can call Him the Eternal Son of God. And it is this Eternal Son of God, who is God, who became a man in the body of Jesus Christ.
The Son of God became a man. God became a man as the Son of God. The Eternal Son of God, who is God, became a man. This is why the Bible teaches us that in eternity past God the Son spoke to God the Father and said: “Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;” (Hebrews 10:5).
A body was prepared for the Eternal Son of God. And Mary was told to give the name of Jesus to that baby she was carrying. The baby she was carrying was God in the flesh, God in human form, who would be begotten and born into this world as the Son of God. He was the Son of God before He was conceived in Mary’s womb, and He was the Son of God when He was born into this world. Jesus is the Son of God.
God did this so we could relate to God
The Bible teaches us that God became a human being and walked upon this earth as the man Jesus Christ:
“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” (John 1:14).
The Bible teaches us that because we are human beings created in the image of God, God sent His own Son as a human being into this world so we could relate to Him and learn from Him.
The Bible teaches us that: “Because God’s children are human beings–made of flesh and blood–the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.” (Hebrews 2:14).
In order to free humanity from the power of the devil and the power of death, the Son of God had to enter a human body and live on earth like a man. In this way the Eternal Son of God, as a man, could break the power of the devil and power of death that is like a blanket over all of humanity.
God used the body of man to die on the cross for our sins so that we would not have to die. God entered the human race as the Son of Man to die as the only sacrifice acceptable to God the Father as a payment for our sins. Jesus was the ransom payment so that anyone who believes in Him will be freed from the power of death and the power of the devil.
This is why the Bible teaches us that: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17).
