Jesus died on the cross for our sins and after He died the soldiers wanted to make sure that He was dead so they took a spear and made a hole in Jesus’ side and the blood and water of Jesus was poured out upon the ground. In this way the soldiers made sure that Jesus was dead.

And this blood is the blood that forgives us of our sins and washes away our sins.

We can read what Jesus said about the blood:

“He replied, “One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me. For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

Judas, the one who would betray him, also asked, “Rabbi, am I the one?”

And Jesus told him, “You have said it.”

As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”

And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.” – Matthew 26

The cup that Jesus gave His disciples was a cup used by them when they were eating dinner with Jesus. The cup was filled with wine which is a drink made from grapes. And Jesus said: “this is my blood”.

The blood of God

This blood was not only the blood of Jesus – it was the blood of God. One of the greatest mysteries in the whole world is that God became a man and lived upon this earth in a body – and His name was Jesus. And Jesus lived and grew up to be a man. He took upon Himself the sins of the world and died on the cross for our sins. The Bible says: “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”

But Jesus did. Jesus resisted the temptations to sin and was killed upon the cross. And His blood poured out. Jesus was a man; but Jesus was also God. So it was the blood of God that was poured out upon the cross for our sins: truly a miracle.

It says in the Bible that God bought the people who believe in Him with His own blood: “Feed and shepherd God’s flock – his church, purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). He purchased us with His blood. He bought us with His blood. He paid a price for our souls with His blood. Jesus paid for us, we don’t have to pay anything to Him for our salvation. The cost is all His. It is hard for us to understand that we receive salvation for our souls for free, that we do not have t pay anything for our salvation, that God through His Son Jesus Christ upon the cross is the one who purchased us with His blood.

God loves us so much that He will willing to humble Himself and die on a cross for our sins. He showed His love to us by dying on a cross at the hands of sinful men. And Jesus told His disciples that after He died on the cross they were to remember Him by drinking wine made from grapes that He said was His blood.

The Old Law versus the New Spirit

God gave laws to the people of Israel through His prophet Moses: Moses received these laws from Mount Sinai for the Israelites to know how to live for God. But the Law was not able to save them from their sins, it only showed them that they were sinners and they needed to be forgiven by God. They knew how to live because they had the law, but they could not earn there way into heaven because they were not able to live their lives perfectly by the law.

So God came down from heaven into the body of a man and lived a perfect life for us: He fulfilled the law. He never sinned and cannot sin. And by living a perfect life as a man He did not have to die as a man because they Word of God says that all who sin will die. This is the curse and the punishment that God placed upon Mankind after Adam and Eve sinned. God said that the day you sin will be the day that death will enter the human race. That is why everyone who is born on the earth dies. The soul that sinneth will die.

But because Jesus chose to die for us, if we believe in Him we do not have to die. We should die because of our sins, but because Jesus died for us we do not have to die. Hallelujah!

In the Old Testament God told the Israelites to build a Temple and to kill animals as a sacrifice to the Lord. When God saw the Israelites killing the animals in the Temple He would look from heaven the forgive their sins. They had to sacrifice animals every day and also on special holy days.

When Jesus came John the Baptist said: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Jesus because the sacrifice for our sins, He became sin for us.

Here is how the Bible talks about our sins:

“That first covenant between God and Israel had regulations for worship and a place of worship here on earth. There were two rooms in that Tabernacle. In the first room were a lampstand, a table, and sacred loaves of bread on the table. This room was called the Holy Place. Then there was a curtain, and behind the curtain was the second room called the Most Holy Place. In that room were a gold incense altar and a wooden chest called the Ark of the Covenant, which was covered with gold on all sides. Inside the Ark were a gold jar containing manna, Aaron’s staff that sprouted leaves, and the stone tablets of the covenant. Above the Ark were the cherubim of divine glory, whose wings stretched out over the Ark’s cover, the place of atonement. But we cannot explain these things in detail now.

When these things were all in place, the priests regularly entered the first room as they performed their religious duties. But only the high priest ever entered the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. And he always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.

This is an illustration pointing to the present time. For the gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them. For that old system deals only with food and drink and various cleansing ceremonies—physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established.

So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.

Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.” (Hebrews 9)

There are many ways that we see blood in our lives and many reasons why blood has been spilled. Blood is usually seen after something bad has happened, but sometimes it is good.

When Jesus died His blood was taken out of Him by violence because He stood up against sin. Jesus lived on earth in the body of a man to suffer and die for our sins, but the good news is that he rose from the dead after 3 days and is now sitting in heaven at the right had of God.

Jesus is praying for us to His Father. Jesus is listening to our prayers. Jesus is waiting to forgive your sins.

So if you are wanted Jesus to wash away the sins that you have committed by His blood then you can join me in a prayer.

Lord Jesus Christ, we pray that you would save us from our sins by washing them away with your blood. Take away the guilt that we feel and the sorrow we feel for all the bad things we have done. We are sorry for our sins and ask you to forgive us in Jesus name. Amen.
